Lawyers Arrested for Defending Political Prisoners in Peru?Below is a sample letter. In your letters, please state your views as they directly relate to the facts and history given in this sample letter and/or in the IEC Update article "Fujimori Regime Arrests Lawyers for Defending Political Prisoners" (October 1998). In these (our own materials) everything has been carefully fact-checked to our best ability. Sticking to the facts is important because we do not wish to add to the many political allegations, rumors, and attacks to which the arrested lawyers have been subjected by the Peruvian press and courts.
Please send us a copy of your letters, to be shared with the attorneys and supporters for the imprisoned lawyers:

Dear Dr. Schmidt // Dear Dr. Taiana:I/we strongly protest the illegal detention of Peruvian defense attorneys Drs. Luis A. Ramon Landaure, Carlos A. Gamero Quispe, Teodoro Bendezu Montes, Ernesto Messa Delgado, Fredy Huaraz Riquez, Esteban Suarez Gonzalez, Rodolfo Ascencios, Magno Marinos Abanto, and others. These brave attorneys have risked their own lives to provide defense for people who have been accused by the government of terrorism and treason. Now these attorneys themselves are being charged with treason for the crime of exercising their profession.
These arrests are part of a concerted campaign by the government to impede the ability of political prisoners in Peru to defend themselves. Trials in Peru are notorious for the denial of due process, and now the illegal round-up of attorneys who defend these prisoners provides the government of Peru one more way to deny prisoners the ability to defend themselves. These attorneys are being held incommunicado, the lawyers representing them have been prevented from having access to their case files, and the charges are based on manufactured evidence.
This blatant attack on the right of defense and the free exercise of the legal profession in Peru must stop. These lawyers must be freed immediately. I/we urgently call upon [[ the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention // the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights ]] to intercede on behalf of these attorneys.
