The people of Peru are celebrating the fall of US puppet Alberto Fujimori. Fujimori and his CIA assassin Montesinos carried out murderous crimes in the service of Peru's exploiters and their US godfathers. We are happy to see them running like cowardly dogs. At the same time we know that those taking their places represent the same oppressors and exploiters. Only the People's War being led by the Communist Party of Peru (PCP) is putting power in the hands of the oppressed.
Fujimori sent a letter of resignation from Japan where he took up exile to avoid answering for his crimes and corruption. The Congress of Peru removed him -- declaring him "morally unfit to rule." But both Fujimori and the Congress that removed him represent the same big capitalists and big landlords, allied with imperialism, who grow fat off the blood and suffering of the people. ALL these vultures are unfit to rule.
When Fujimori came to power in 1990 he was given two jobs by Peru's rulers: defeat the Maoist People's War and stabilize the Peruvian economy for global capitalists to exploit. He has failed at both. The People's War continues despite the regime's brutal crimes against the people and the revolution. Meanwhile, Fujimori's IMF-dictated economic measures have failed and only brought more misery and suffering.
During his ten-year rule the number of poor in Peru has doubled; unemployment is worse than ever; and hundreds of thousands of Peruvian children have died from diseases of poverty. The economy is in recession and nine billion dollars of Peru's resources have been sold off to global imperialists.
Fujimori will be remembered most for carrying out a US-directed reign of terror against the people -- the murderous campaign aimed at stopping the People's War. After his 1992 military coup Fujimori ordered an assault on Canto Grande Prison, killing 40 revolutionary prisoners in cold blood. Police and military occupied the universities and raided the shantytowns -- arresting and torturing tens of thousands. Today there are 5,000 political prisoners who were sentenced by secret military or civilian tribunals that gave them no opportunity to defend themselves. Most were convicted for having supported or participated in the Maoist People's War.
One of the most notorious of Fujimori's crimes has been the brutal treatment of Chairman Gonzalo of the Communist Party of Peru (Dr. Abimael Guzman). US CIA agents directly led the operation that captured him in 1992. Two weeks later, Chairman Gonzalo was tried by military judges and prosecutors who wore hoods to hide their identities. Threatened with execution, he has been held for the last eight years in extreme isolation in an underground bunker that Fujimori described as "a slow death." Chairman Gonzalo has been denied all visits from family, lawyers, or sympathetic doctors. This barbaric treatment is unacceptable and must be ended. Chairman Gonzalo must be seen in person and be allowed to speak.
Now that the crimes of the Fujimori-Montesinos regime are coming more into the open, US officials are throwing up their hands in sham horror and phony disbelief. But every crime of Fujimori and Montesinos was carried out to serve the interests of the US imperialists and Peru's big exploiters. The hands of the US are soaked with the blood of Peru's people. Today the US is helping organize a new Peruvian regime with a less tarnished image, but whose role is to continue US domination and the dirty counterinsurgency war.
The fall of Fujimori is an opportunity to further expose the US hand behind the misery and suffering of Peru's people. Now is a time, more than ever, to stand with the People's War and demand justice for Peru's revolutionary prisoners. We must make the new regime end the brutal isolation of Chairman Gonzalo, and to likewise end the isolation of Comrade Feliciano, the PCP leader captured in 1999.
In a 1998 document the Communist Party of Peru said: "[The government's] dream was and still is to annihilate the People's War, but despite difficulties and setbacks the People's War is being maintained and advanced, routing the reactionary military campaigns and counter-subversive operations… The People's War is the people's road to emancipation and the winning of a new society…"
